Q + A WITH SALT SHOP PURE GOODS
1. WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
Happiness, education and collaboration, these are the three main reasons that I do what I do. First off, it makes me happy! I believe that every individual in this world deserves to follow their bliss. And creating sustainable fashion, home decor and unique spaces is what gets my soul excited to tackle a new day.
I am passionate about creating conscious consumers, this is the reason that education is next on my list. I want consumers to understand the roots of $5.00 fashion and why buying long lasting, local and sustainable items create a happier planet, home and lifestyle. I understand that we are not all made of money, but if we are at least aware of the process behind our purchases we can vote with our dollar!
Lastly collaboration - I am an open book, always have been and always will be. I am generous with my time and knowledge, I enjoy sharing it. Plus have you seen some of the awesome small business's out there. I love supporting small brands, manufacturers and designers. It's their creativity and innovation within there vocation that gets me excited. I just want to help them be successful so sharing there items and stories online and in store seems like a good plan.
2. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT WILL TAKE FOR CONSUMERS TO BEGIN QUESTIONING WHERE THEIR CLOTHES ARE COMING FROM AND HOW IT'S EFFECTING OUR EARTH?
SELF LOVE. I think there are a lot of consumers that want to stick their head in the sand, or those that are ruled by their budget and not their minds. The truth is we all have a job to do, we need to honour ourselves first. Honouring ourselves as individuals is the first step in making conscious choices. By conscious choices I mean a decision that comes from the heart, not from peer pressure, fear or stress. Once we master that we can choose to care, the education is out there, we just have to want to look for it. Once we honour ourselves we will no longer feel the need to chase fads or fit into a social bubble. We will be able to make choices that are good for our soul, our life and the planet. I believe that self love and acceptance in the key to the greater picture of how we are all connected.
3. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE IN SLOW FASHION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF BUYING LOCAL?
My passion for supporting local and slow fashion stems from my belief in honouring community. Long lasting, local and sustainably crafted items are easier on the environment as well as being made by individuals that are passionate about there job. Most are small companies run by friends or family. This creates a working community that is fun and honours the makers for who they are as individuals as well as a brand.
4. WHAT DOES YOUR WARDROBE LOOK LIKE? (FAVOURITE BRANDS, KEY PIECES, MATERIALS ETC.)
Oh this is a fun topic. I love clothes, and shoes, ha ha. I must say I'm pretty basic! If you were to look into my closet you would see a lot of black, grey and white with touches of denim and navy. I tend to layer things, a basic Ula v-neck tee, made by yours truly with a pair of MUD Jeans, birks and a cozy sweater or button up to complete the look. Being super active, I also appreciate a basic pair of leggins to take with me when I am on the run!
I would have to say my favourite brands are: My own, SALT, its full of great long lasting bamboo basics. For jeans I am a fan of MUD or Nudie they are both organic and long lasting. For shoes I tend to choose basics that will stand the test of time, like Birkenstocks and Blundstones, what can I say I am an Island girl at heart!
5. IF YOU COULD TELL CONSUMERS ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Love and accept yourself. You are unique, honour that and then pay it forward and honour others so they can learn from you and we can change the world!
