MY MODERN CLOSET | January 11, 2017

Alana Oates is the creator and founder of Llani, a line of globally-inspired (and ethically produced) slippers and shoes.

After internet-stalking the brand (and patiently waiting for the launch of international shipping), we reached out and asked Alana to tell us about her personal style and share her thoughts on the future of fashion:

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO YOU TO KNOW WHERE YOUR CLOTHES ARE MADE?

After a few years working for a responsible fast fashion company, I can't say 100% that I'll never shop fast again, but seeing the incredible amount of waste being made in the office from our sampling and design process has really made me look at our industry in a new light. I've been lucky enough to travel and see the ins and outs of factories in several countries and I've always been rather impressed, but it's what happens to the clothes after we are 'over them' that gives me pause. I love shipping vintage, consignment, and thrift, or even 'swapping' with friends. I've been trying to borrow before running to the mall if I need something on short notice.

WHAT ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET MAKES YOU FEEL MOST LIKE YOU?

I feel most like me in a pair of shoes I've designed! Of course, I own quite a few pairs from shops and designers I admire, but if I'm going to a special event or a big meeting, I know I'll feel best when I'm wearing a shoe that I can speak to.

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING OF WHEN YOU GET DRESSED IN THE MORNING + HOW DOES THAT IMPACT YOUR CHOICES?

I'm always thinking about my day ahead and being best prepared for that. Now that I work mostly from home, my day to day is always different. When I'm home I try not to fall into a 'sweat pant- big -teeshirt' void. I'll put on something I feel relaxed in, but nothing I wouldn't walk outside of the house in. A pair of loose velvet pants, a satin tank, and a silk wrap or cashmere cardigan with a pair of Llani slippers is perfect.

DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CLOTHES?

We are married but also best friends and we have 4 kids, 6 grandkids, and 3 dogs. We will die holding each other like that old couple in The Notebook.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION THE FUTURE OF FASHION?

I love that as fashion and style evolves, it's becoming more 'anything goes'. I think the future of fashion holds less rules. Wear high/low, where whatever makes you feel great. If you wearing a Gildan white tee shirt from Wal-Mart, Levis, vintage Prada pumps, and a corduroy jacket from a thrift shop, you probably look incredible. I recently got married (yay!) and full disclosure, my complete head to toe wedding look cost less than most of us will spend on a new pair of jeans. #rulebreaker

We like her style.
